Test Details
The HLA-B27 flow cytometry test is a diagnostic test used to detect the presence of HLA-B27 antigen on the surface of white blood cells. HLA-B27 is a specific genetic marker that is associated with certain autoimmune diseases, such as ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.
During the test, a blood sample is collected from the patient and treated with fluorescently-labeled antibodies that specifically bind to HLA-B27 antigen. The sample is then analyzed using a flow cytometer, a specialized instrument that can detect and quantify the fluorescence emitted by the labeled antibodies. If HLA-B27 antigen is present on the white blood cells, it will be detected by the flow cytometer.
The HLA-B27 flow cytometry test is highly sensitive and specific for detecting the presence of HLA-B27 antigen. However, it is important to note that a positive test result does not necessarily mean that the individual has or will develop an autoimmune disease. Further clinical evaluation and additional tests may be required to confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment plan.
