The Factor IX Functional Test is a specialized diagnostic examination aimed at assessing the activity level of Factor IX, a crucial protein in the blood coagulation process. This test is essential in diagnosing and managing conditions related to blood clotting disorders, particularly Hemophilia B, also known as Christmas disease. By measuring the activity of Factor IX, healthcare providers can determine the severity of the disorder and tailor treatment plans accordingly.

DNA Labs UAE, a leading facility in medical diagnostics, offers the Factor IX Functional Test. The cost of the test at DNA Labs UAE is 410 AED. Conducted by experienced professionals using state-of-the-art technology, this test ensures accurate and reliable results, providing critical information for the effective management of blood clotting disorders. Factor IX Functional Test

Overview

Factor IX is a clotting factor that plays a crucial role in the coagulation cascade. It is a glycoprotein produced in the liver and is essential for the normal blood clotting process. The factor IX functional test is a laboratory test that measures the activity level of factor IX in the blood. This test is used to diagnose and monitor bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia B (also known as Christmas disease), which is characterized by a deficiency or dysfunction of factor IX.

Test Details

The factor IX functional test measures the activity level of factor IX in the blood. During the test, a blood sample is collected from the patient and mixed with a substance that triggers the clotting process. The time it takes for the blood to clot is measured, and the result is compared to a reference range to determine the level of factor IX activity. A normal factor IX activity level is typically between 50% and 150%. If the activity level is below this range, it indicates a deficiency or dysfunction of factor IX, which can lead to excessive bleeding or delayed clotting. The severity of the bleeding disorder can be determined based on the factor IX activity level.

Test Procedure

To perform the factor IX functional test, a sample of 3 mL whole blood is collected in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube. The sample should be mixed thoroughly by inversion and transported to the lab within 4 hours. If immediate transportation is not possible, the sample should be centrifuged to make platelet-poor plasma (PPP) within 1 hour of collection. The PPP should be frozen immediately and shipped frozen. It is recommended to fast overnight before the test, and a duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory.

Report Delivery

The report for the factor IX functional test is delivered on Wednesdays and Saturdays by 9 am. If the sample is collected on a Friday or Tuesday, the report will be delivered on the following Friday or Tuesday.

Pre-Test Information

It is preferred to fast overnight before the test. A duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. It is recommended to discontinue the use of Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling, as these drugs may affect the test results. Discontinuation should be done with prior consent from the treating Physician.

Conclusion

The factor IX functional test is a valuable diagnostic tool for identifying and monitoring bleeding disorders, specifically hemophilia B. By measuring the activity level of factor IX in the blood, healthcare professionals can determine the severity of the bleeding disorder and develop an appropriate treatment plan. DNA Labs UAE offers the factor IX functional test at a cost of AED 410.0. Contact our Hematology department to schedule an appointment or for more information.
