The TORCH panel IgG extended test is a blood test that screens for antibodies against several infectious agents that can cause congenital infections. TORCH stands for Toxoplasma gondii, Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Herpes simplex virus (HSV). This extended version of the TORCH panel also includes additional tests for other infectious agents such as Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), Parvovirus B19, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The test is typically performed on pregnant women to assess their immunity to these infectious agents, as exposure during pregnancy can lead to serious complications for the fetus. The presence of IgG antibodies indicates a past infection or immunity to the specific pathogen. It is important to note that this test only detects IgG antibodies, which are produced later in the course of infection. IgM antibodies, which are produced earlier and indicate a current or recent infection, are not included in this test.
