Test Details
The Stomach Health Test, also known as the Gastro Panel Test, is a diagnostic test that evaluates the health of the stomach and its functions. This test assesses various markers and indicators related to stomach health, including the presence of specific antibodies and proteins. The Gastro Panel Test is commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. It can also be helpful in determining the cause of symptoms such as abdominal pain, indigestion, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
During the test, a blood sample is taken from the patient, and the sample is then analyzed in a laboratory. The specific markers evaluated in the Gastro Panel Test may vary, but commonly include:
- Pepsinogen: This enzyme is produced by the stomach and is necessary for the digestion of proteins. Low levels of pepsinogen may indicate impaired stomach function or damage to the stomach lining.
- Gastrin: Gastrin is a hormone that stimulates the production of stomach acid. Abnormal levels of gastrin may suggest conditions such as gastrinoma (a tumor that produces excessive gastrin) or pernicious anemia.
- Helicobacter pylori antibodies: Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that can cause stomach infections and contribute to the development of ulcers and gastritis. The presence of antibodies to this bacterium indicates a current or past infection.
- Intrinsic factor antibodies: Intrinsic factor is a protein produced by the stomach that is essential for the absorption of vitamin B12. The presence of antibodies against intrinsic factor may suggest pernicious anemia, a condition characterized by vitamin B12 deficiency.
The results of the Gastro Panel Test can help healthcare providers determine the appropriate treatment and management plan for patients with stomach-related conditions. It is important to note that this test should be interpreted by a healthcare professional, as results can vary depending on individual circumstances and medical history.
