Test Details
The INTERLEUKIN-6 (IL-6) EXTENDED PANEL test is a diagnostic tool used to measure the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the blood. IL-6 is a cytokine, a type of protein that plays a crucial role in the immune response and inflammation.
This test is typically ordered when there is suspicion of an underlying inflammatory condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or vasculitis. It can also be used to monitor the response to treatment in patients with these conditions.
The IL-6 extended panel test may include additional markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and other cytokines, to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the inflammatory process.
Elevated levels of IL-6 can indicate the presence of inflammation or an overactive immune response. Monitoring IL-6 levels can help healthcare providers assess disease activity, guide treatment decisions, and evaluate the effectiveness of therapy.
It is important to note that the interpretation of IL-6 levels should be done in conjunction with clinical symptoms and other laboratory tests to obtain a comprehensive picture of the patient’s condition.
