Factor VIII Functional Activity Test
Test Cost: AED 420.0
Symptoms: Prolonged bleeding, easy bruising, spontaneous bleeding into joints or muscles
Diagnosis: Hemophilia A
Test Name: FACTOR VIII FUNCTIONAL ACTIVITY Test
Components: 3 mL whole blood in 1 Blue Top (Sodium Citrate) tube
Sample Condition: Mix thoroughly by inversion. Transport to Lab within 4 hours. If this is not possible, make PPP within 1 hour of collection as follows: Centrifuge sample at 3600 rpm for 15 min. & transfer supernatant to a clean plastic tube. Centrifuge this supernatant again at 3600 rpm for 15 mins. & finally transfer the supernatant (PPP) to 1 labelled, clean plastic screw capped vial. FREEZE IMMEDIATELY. Ship frozen. DO NOT THAW. Overnight fasting is preferred. Duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory.
Report Delivery: Sample daily by 11 am; Report same day
Method: Electromechanical Clot Detection
Test Type: Disorders of Coagulation
Doctor: Hematologist
Test Department: COAGULATION
Pre Test Information: Overnight fasting is preferred. Duly filled Coagulation Requisition Form (Form 15) is mandatory. It is recommended that the patient discontinues Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling as these drugs may affect test results. Discontinuation should be with prior consent from the treating Physician.
Test Details: The Factor VIII Functional / Activity Test is a laboratory test used to measure the activity level of Factor VIII in the blood. Factor VIII is a protein that plays a crucial role in the blood clotting process. It helps in the formation of blood clots by interacting with other proteins in the clotting cascade. This test is primarily performed to diagnose and monitor bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia A. Hemophilia A is a genetic disorder characterized by a deficiency or dysfunction of Factor VIII. Individuals with hemophilia A may experience prolonged bleeding, easy bruising, and spontaneous bleeding into joints or muscles. During the Factor VIII Functional / Activity Test, a blood sample is collected from the patient. The sample is then mixed with other substances that activate the clotting process. The time taken for the blood to clot is measured, and the activity level of Factor VIII is calculated based on this clotting time. The results of this test are reported as a percentage of normal Factor VIII activity. A result of 100% indicates normal activity, while lower percentages indicate a deficiency or dysfunction of Factor VIII. The severity of the bleeding disorder can be determined based on the activity level of Factor VIII. This test is often performed alongside other coagulation tests, such as the Factor VIII Antigen Test, which measures the amount of Factor VIII protein in the blood. It is important to note that the Factor VIII Functional / Activity Test is not used to diagnose the specific genetic mutation causing hemophilia A. For that, genetic testing may be necessary.
