Test Details
The thallium 24-hour urine test is a diagnostic test used to measure the levels of thallium in a person’s urine over a 24-hour period. Thallium is a heavy metal that can be toxic to the body if levels become too high. This test is typically ordered when there is suspicion of thallium poisoning or exposure to high levels of thallium. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for thallium toxicity.
To perform the test, the individual will collect all of their urine over a 24-hour period. The urine samples are then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The laboratory will measure the amount of thallium present in the urine and compare it to normal levels. Elevated levels of thallium in the urine may indicate thallium poisoning or exposure.
Symptoms of thallium poisoning can include gastrointestinal distress, hair loss, neurological symptoms, and cardiac abnormalities. If thallium poisoning is suspected, immediate medical attention is necessary.
It is important to note that the thallium 24-hour urine test is not a routine test and is only ordered in specific situations where thallium exposure is suspected. The test should be performed under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
