Test Details
The Zinc 24-hour urine test is a diagnostic test that measures the amount of zinc excreted in a person’s urine over a 24-hour period. Zinc is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including immune system function, wound healing, and DNA synthesis.
This test is typically ordered to evaluate zinc levels in individuals suspected of having a zinc deficiency or excess. It can help diagnose conditions such as Wilson’s disease, which is characterized by excessive zinc accumulation in the body, or to monitor the effectiveness of zinc supplementation in individuals with malabsorption issues or other conditions that may affect zinc absorption.
To perform the test, the individual collects all urine produced over a 24-hour period in a special container provided by the healthcare provider. The container may contain a preservative to prevent zinc degradation. It is important to follow specific instructions provided by the healthcare provider to ensure accurate results.
After the collection period, the urine sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The laboratory measures the zinc concentration in the urine and calculates the total amount of zinc excreted over the 24-hour period. The results are typically reported as milligrams of zinc per 24 hours.
Abnormal results may indicate a zinc deficiency or excess, which can help guide further diagnostic testing or treatment options. It is important to interpret the results in conjunction with other clinical information and consult with a healthcare provider for appropriate management.
