Test Details
The VMA (Vanillylmandelic Acid) 24-hour urine test is a diagnostic test used to measure the levels of vanillylmandelic acid in the urine. Vanillylmandelic acid is a breakdown product of the neurotransmitters epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are produced by the adrenal glands.
This test is primarily used to diagnose and monitor certain types of tumors, such as neuroblastoma or pheochromocytoma, which can produce excessive amounts of these neurotransmitters. The test is also sometimes used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for these tumors or to monitor for recurrence.
To perform the VMA 24-hour urine test, the patient is instructed to collect all urine produced over a 24-hour period in a special container provided by the laboratory. The container usually contains a preservative to prevent the breakdown of vanillylmandelic acid.
The patient should avoid certain foods and medications that can interfere with the test results, as advised by the healthcare provider. Once the urine collection is complete, the container is returned to the laboratory for analysis. The laboratory measures the concentration of vanillylmandelic acid in the urine sample.
Elevated levels of vanillylmandelic acid may indicate the presence of a tumor that produces excessive amounts of epinephrine or norepinephrine. It is important to note that the VMA test is not specific to a particular tumor type and can also be elevated in other conditions, such as stress or certain medications. Therefore, further diagnostic tests may be needed to confirm the presence of a tumor.
The healthcare provider will interpret the test results and discuss the findings with the patient, including the need for further testing or treatment.
