Test Details
The TB Gold Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) test is a blood test used to detect tuberculosis (TB) infection. It is an alternative to the traditional tuberculin skin test (TST) and is based on the principle that individuals infected with TB will produce a specific immune response.
During the test, blood is drawn from the patient and exposed to specific TB antigens. If the patient has been infected with TB, their immune cells will release interferon-gamma in response to these antigens. The level of interferon-gamma released is then measured, with higher levels indicating a positive result for TB infection.
The TB Gold IGRA test is more specific than the TST and does not cross-react with the Bacillus Calmette-Gurin (BCG) vaccine, which is commonly used to prevent TB. It is also less affected by prior exposure to non-TB mycobacteria, reducing the likelihood of false-positive results.
This test is typically used for individuals who are at higher risk of TB infection, such as healthcare workers, immigrants from countries with high TB prevalence, and individuals with compromised immune systems. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of TB treatment.
It is important to note that a positive TB Gold IGRA test does not confirm active TB disease. Further diagnostic tests, such as chest X-rays and sputum cultures, are required to determine if active TB is present.
