Test Details
The RETICULIN IgA antibody test is a blood test used to diagnose celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the body reacts to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When a person with celiac disease consumes gluten, their immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the small intestine, leading to inflammation and damage.
The RETICULIN IgA antibody test measures the levels of IgA antibodies against reticulin, a protein that is found in the connective tissue of the small intestine. In individuals with celiac disease, the immune system produces these antibodies in response to the presence of gluten. Elevated levels of RETICULIN IgA antibodies indicate a higher likelihood of celiac disease.
It is important to note that the RETICULIN IgA antibody test is not commonly used anymore, as more specific and sensitive tests, such as tissue transglutaminase IgA (tTG IgA) and deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP) IgA/IgG, have replaced it. These newer tests have higher accuracy and are recommended for diagnosing celiac disease.
If the RETICULIN IgA antibody test comes back positive, further testing, such as an endoscopy with small intestine biopsy, may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis of celiac disease. A gluten-free diet is the primary treatment for celiac disease, and it typically leads to a resolution of symptoms and healing of the small intestine.
