Test Details
The Islet Cell Antibody (ICA) test is a blood test used to detect the presence of autoantibodies against islet cells in the pancreas. Islet cells are responsible for producing insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels.
The ICA test is primarily used to diagnose type 1 diabetes and differentiate it from type 2 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the islet cells, leading to a lack of insulin production. This autoimmune response can be detected by measuring the levels of islet cell antibodies in the blood.
A positive result for the ICA test indicates the presence of islet cell antibodies and suggests an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes. However, it does not necessarily mean that a person will definitely develop the condition.
It is important to note that the ICA test is not commonly used for routine screening or diagnosis of diabetes. It is typically reserved for cases where there is uncertainty about the type of diabetes or when a person has atypical features or symptoms.
Other tests, such as the measurement of blood glucose levels, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and C-peptide levels, are usually used in conjunction with the ICA test to make a definitive diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment for diabetes.
