The Folate (Folic Acid) RBC test is a blood test that measures the levels of folate or folic acid in red blood cells (RBCs). Folate is a B-vitamin that is essential for the production and maintenance of new cells, including red blood cells. It is also important for the synthesis of DNA and RNA.
The Folate RBC test is used to evaluate folate deficiency or excess in the body. Folate deficiency can occur due to inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption, certain medications, or increased demand during pregnancy or certain medical conditions. Symptoms of folate deficiency may include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, and impaired immune function.
On the other hand, excess folate levels can occur due to excessive supplementation or certain medical conditions. High folate levels may mask vitamin B12 deficiency and lead to neurological problems.
The Folate RBC test provides a more accurate assessment of folate status compared to the regular serum folate test, as it measures the levels of folate inside the red blood cells where it is actively used. The results of the test are usually reported as a value indicating the amount of folate per unit of red blood cells.
