Test Details
The 1p & 19q codeletion test is a genetic test used to detect the loss of genetic material on the short arm of chromosome 1 (1p) and the long arm of chromosome 19 (19q) in certain types of brain tumors, specifically oligodendrogliomas.
Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is the technique used for this test. It involves labeling specific DNA probes with fluorescent molecules and then hybridizing them to the patient’s tumor cells. The probes used in this test are designed to bind to specific regions on chromosomes 1p and 19q. If there is a deletion in these regions, the probes will not bind and there will be a loss of fluorescence signal, indicating the presence of a 1p & 19q codeletion.
The 1p & 19q codeletion is considered a favorable genetic alteration in oligodendrogliomas. It is associated with better response to certain treatments and longer overall survival. Therefore, identifying this codeletion is important for guiding treatment decisions and predicting prognosis in patients with oligodendrogliomas.
