The Desmoglein (DSG) 1 and 3 antibody in dilution/end point titre test is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of antibodies against Desmoglein 1 and 3 proteins in the blood. Desmogleins are proteins found in the desmosomes, which are structures that hold cells together in tissues such as the skin and mucous membranes.
Antibodies against Desmoglein 1 and 3 are associated with autoimmune diseases, particularly pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus, which are blistering disorders of the skin and mucous membranes.
In the test, the patient’s blood sample is collected and diluted with a series of dilutions. Each dilution is then tested to determine the highest dilution at which the antibodies against Desmoglein 1 and 3 can still be detected. This highest dilution is known as the endpoint titre.
The test results are reported as the endpoint titre, which indicates the level of antibodies against Desmoglein 1 and 3 in the patient’s blood. Higher endpoint titres suggest a stronger immune response against these proteins and may indicate a higher likelihood of autoimmune blistering disorders such as pemphigus vulgaris or pemphigus foliaceus.
The Desmoglein 1 and 3 antibody in dilution/end point titre test is an important diagnostic tool in the evaluation of autoimmune blistering disorders and helps in confirming the diagnosis and guiding treatment decisions.
