Breast cancer ER (estrogen receptor), PR (progesterone receptor), HER-2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2), and Ki-67 are all biomarkers used to determine the characteristics of breast cancer cells. ER and PR are hormone receptors that help determine if the cancer cells are sensitive to estrogen and progesterone. A positive ER or PR status means that the cancer cells are sensitive to these hormones and can be treated with hormone therapy. HER-2 is a protein that is overexpressed in some breast cancer cells. HER-2 positive breast cancer is typically more aggressive and may require targeted therapies such as Herceptin. Ki-67 is a protein that indicates the level of cell proliferation or how fast the cancer cells are dividing. A higher Ki-67 index suggests a more aggressive tumor. These biomarkers are important in determining the treatment options for breast cancer. They help guide decisions regarding hormone therapy, targeted therapies, and chemotherapy.
