Test Details
The Maternal Serum Screen 2: Advanced Reflex to Maternal Blood for Fetal DNA (MBFD) Chromosome 21 Test is a prenatal screening test that helps assess the risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities in a developing fetus, specifically for Chromosome 21. During pregnancy, a small amount of fetal DNA can be found in the mother’s bloodstream. This test utilizes advanced technology to analyze the maternal blood sample and specifically detect any abnormalities in Chromosome 21, such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21).
The test is typically recommended for pregnant women who have an increased risk of having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities, based on factors like maternal age, family history, or previous abnormal test results. It can also be offered as a follow-up test if an initial screening test suggests a higher risk.
The Maternal Serum Screen 2: Advanced Reflex to Maternal Blood for Fetal DNA (MBFD) Chromosome 21 Test provides a more accurate assessment of the risk compared to traditional screening methods. However, it is important to note that this test is not diagnostic and cannot provide a definitive diagnosis of a chromosomal abnormality. If the test results indicate an increased risk, further diagnostic testing, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, may be recommended to confirm the findings.
It is essential to discuss the benefits, limitations, and potential risks of this test with a healthcare provider to make an informed decision about whether to proceed with the Maternal Serum Screen 2: Advanced Reflex to Maternal Blood for Fetal DNA (MBFD) Chromosome 21 Test.
