PLASMA RENIN DIRECT Test
The PLASMA RENIN DIRECT test is a diagnostic test used to measure the levels of renin in the blood. Renin is an enzyme produced by the kidneys that plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. The test is usually ordered to evaluate the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which is a hormonal system involved in controlling blood pressure.
Test Details:
- Test Name: PLASMA RENIN DIRECT Test
- Components: Renin level measurement
- Price: 1220.0 AED
- Sample Condition: 3 mL (2.5 mL min.) plasma from 1 LavenderTop(EDTA)tube. Patient should be ambulatory / upright 2 hours prior to the test. Separate plasma and freeze. Ship frozen. DO NOT THAW.
- Drug Interactions: Potassium wasting diuretics, Spironolactone, Eplerenone, Amiloride, and Triamterene should be discontinued at least for 4 weeks; Adrenergic blockers, Clonidine, Methyldopa, NSAIDs, Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, Angiotensin receptor blockers, Renin inhibitors, and Dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonists should be discontinued for 2 weeks. If necessary to maintain hypertension control, patients should be treated with other antihypertensive medications like Verapamil slow-release, Hydralazine, Prazosin, Doxazosin & Terazosin that have lesser effects on Plasma renin levels. Any change in medication should be done in consultation with the treating clinician.
- Report Delivery: Sample Tue / Fri by 11 am; Report Same day
- Method: CLIA
- Test Type: Disorders of Kidney
- Doctor: Nephrologist
- Test Department: N/A
Pre Test Information:
Patient should be ambulatory / upright 2 hours prior to the test. Drug interactions to be noted: Potassium wasting diuretics, Spironolactone, Eplerenone, Amiloride, and Triamterene should be discontinued at least for 4 weeks; Adrenergic blockers, Clonidine, Methyldopa, NSAIDs, Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, Angiotensin receptor blockers, Renin inhibitors, and Dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonists should be discontinued for 2 weeks.
Test Results:
The plasma renin level is measured and reported in ng/mL/hour or ng/L/hour. Abnormal levels of renin in the blood can indicate various medical conditions. High levels of renin may suggest primary hyperaldosteronism, renovascular hypertension, or certain kidney diseases. Low levels of renin may indicate secondary hyperaldosteronism, certain medications, or other conditions that suppress renin production.
Comprehensive Evaluation:
The PLASMA RENIN DIRECT test is usually performed in combination with other tests, such as aldosterone, sodium, and potassium levels, to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the RAAS. The results of the test help healthcare providers determine the underlying cause of a patient’s blood pressure abnormalities and guide appropriate treatment decisions.

It is primarily used to diagnose and monitor conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), renal artery stenosis (narrowing of the renal arteries), and primary aldosteronism (excessive production of aldosterone hormone). During the test, a blood sample is taken from the patient and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The plasma renin level is then measured and reported in ng/mL/hour or ng/L/hour. Abnormal levels of renin in the blood can indicate various medical conditions. High levels of renin may suggest primary hyperaldosteronism, renovascular hypertension, or certain kidney diseases.
