The FLUOXETINE test includes the metabolite Norfluoxetine and the total amount of fluoxetine in the body. It is a therapeutic drug monitoring test conducted using the LC-MS/MS method. The test is ordered by psychiatrists and is performed in our Test Department (OS).
Sample Condition
The sample required for the FLUOXETINE test is 3 mL (1.5 mL min.) of serum from 1 Red Top (No Additive) tube. It is important not to use SST gel barrier tubes. The sample should be shipped refrigerated or frozen. The ideal sampling time is more than 12 hours after the oral dose. Additionally, a duly filled Test Send Out Consent Form is mandatory.
Report Delivery
The sample for the FLUOXETINE test should be sent by the 7th of the month. The report will be delivered after 2-3 weeks.
Pre Test Information
Before taking the FLUOXETINE test, it is important to note that the ideal sampling time is more than 12 hours after the oral dose. Additionally, a duly filled Test Send Out Consent Form is mandatory.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
A fluoxetine test is not a specific medical test. However, certain tests may be ordered by healthcare providers to monitor the response to fluoxetine and check for any potential side effects. These tests may include:
- Blood tests: These are done to monitor liver function and check for any changes in blood cell counts, as fluoxetine can sometimes affect liver enzymes.
- Electrocardiogram (ECG): An ECG is done to check the electrical activity of the heart, as fluoxetine can rarely cause abnormal heart rhythms.
- Serotonin syndrome assessment: Serotonin syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that can occur when there is an excessive amount of serotonin in the body. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, dilated pupils, and muscle rigidity. If a person experiences these symptoms while taking fluoxetine, they should seek immediate medical attention.
It is important to note that these tests are not always necessary for every person taking fluoxetine. The need for testing depends on individual factors such as medical history, current health status, and other medications being taken. It is best to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate tests for a specific situation.

Fluoxetine is a medication that is commonly used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and bulimia nervosa. It belongs to a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which work by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain. A fluoxetine test is not a specific medical test. However, when a person is prescribed fluoxetine, their healthcare provider may order certain tests to monitor their response to the medication and check for any potential side effects. These tests may include: 1. Blood tests: These may be done to monitor liver function, as fluoxetine can sometimes affect liver enzymes.
