Test Details
The VITAMIN PROFILE EXTENDED test is a comprehensive assessment that measures the levels of various vitamins in your body. It provides an in-depth analysis of your vitamin status and can help identify any deficiencies or excesses that may be present. The test typically includes measurements of the following vitamins:
- Vitamin A: This fat-soluble vitamin is important for vision, immune function, and cell growth. Deficiency can lead to night blindness and increased susceptibility to infections.
- Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): This water-soluble vitamin is essential for energy production and nerve function. Deficiency can cause beriberi, a disease characterized by muscle weakness and heart problems.
- Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): This vitamin plays a key role in energy metabolism and the maintenance of healthy skin. Deficiency can lead to skin disorders and oral ulcers.
- Vitamin B3 (Niacin): Niacin is involved in energy production and the synthesis of DNA. Deficiency can result in pellagra, a condition characterized by dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia.
- Vitamin B6: This vitamin is necessary for the production of neurotransmitters and the metabolism of proteins. Deficiency can cause neurological symptoms such as depression and confusion.
- Vitamin B12: B12 is essential for the formation of red blood cells and the proper functioning of the nervous system. Deficiency can lead to pernicious anemia and neurological problems.
- Vitamin C: This water-soluble vitamin is a powerful antioxidant and is important for immune function and collagen synthesis. Deficiency can cause scurvy, which is characterized by fatigue, bleeding gums, and joint pain.
- Vitamin D: This fat-soluble vitamin is crucial for bone health and the absorption of calcium. Deficiency can lead to rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
- Vitamin E: This antioxidant vitamin protects cells from damage and is important for immune function. Deficiency is rare but can lead to muscle weakness and neurological problems.
- Vitamin K: This vitamin is necessary for blood clotting and bone health. Deficiency can result in excessive bleeding and impaired bone formation.
By measuring the levels of these vitamins in your body, the VITAMIN PROFILE EXTENDED test can help you and your healthcare provider identify any deficiencies or excesses that may require intervention. It can also guide appropriate supplementation or dietary changes to optimize your vitamin status and overall health.
