Test Details:
MDM2 is a protein that is involved in the regulation of cell growth and division. It is an important component of the p53 pathway, which is a key tumor suppressor pathway in the body. MDM2 acts as a negative regulator of p53 by binding to it and inhibiting its activity. This prevents p53 from promoting cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in response to DNA damage or other cellular stresses.
In normal cells, MDM2 helps to maintain a balance between cell growth and cell death by keeping p53 activity in check. However, in certain cancer cells, MDM2 can be overexpressed or amplified, leading to increased inhibition of p53 and allowing the cells to evade cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. This can contribute to the development and progression of cancer.
In addition to its role in regulating p53, MDM2 has also been found to have p53-independent functions. It can interact with and regulate the activity of other proteins involved in cell growth and survival, such as the retinoblastoma protein (pRB) and the E2F transcription factors.
MDM2 is a target for cancer therapy, and several drugs have been developed to inhibit its activity. These drugs aim to restore p53 function and promote cell death in cancer cells that have dysfunctional p53 due to MDM2 overexpression.
